Armenia became a COSPAR member

Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) has admitted Cosmic Ray Division of Yerevan Physics Institute (CRD) as the representative of Armenia to COSPAR. COSPAR ( "http://cospar.itodys.jussieu.fr/) is the leading International scientific organization uniting 40 members (Armenia has become the 41st) of the international scientific community involved in the space research. Armenian physicists have always been interested and actively involved in theoretical and applied space science. CRD, established in early forties, has a strong research tradition in studying the cosmic ray phenomena. Currently we actively study the space weather using data from installations of our Aragats Solar Environment Center. Center is established on the basis of our two high altitude stations (2000m. and 3200m.) and Yerevan CRD computing center. Geographic conditions of Mt. Aragats high altitude slopes and number of parameters of cosmic ray fluxes our installations monitor provide the unique combination for the effective ground-based research of CR phenomena. Methods of data analysis developed in our division allow alert the forthcoming severe disturbances of Earth magnetic field, and issue timely warnings and reports on space weather conditions (see the first and second press releases of the CRD Aragats Solar Environment Center available at http://crdlx5.yerphi.am/proj/solar-main.html).

Activities of the Center will be very important during the years to come in view of the upcoming peak of solar activity in the current 23rd solar cycle. Taking into account the nature of the research being carried out at the CRD we expect the membership in COSPAR be highly beneficial for the advancement of space weather research at CRD, and the space related disciplines of Armenian science in general.
